American Railways

I've never had much luck photographing American railways. Mostly because normally when I see them I'm with clients and it isn't the done thing to get excited when a loco rumbles past, and partly because when I do see them they tend not to be easily accessible.

A week cycling the Great Allegheny Passage  and the C&O Canal has gone some way to improving the situation. I'm still sorting through photos, so these will more or less have to speak for themselves for now.

  1. Very envious of your trips to the US...I just know that if I went there I would come back with a severe case of Short-Line fever! Very interesting shots and infrastructure. Incidentally, I've just discovered your blog through Geoff Forster's and it's a great read!

  2. Iain,

I am more than flattered given how much I enjoyed your articles when I was younger. I'm still amazed by your recent BCF model, which just pushed all the buttons for me.

What I came back with from the USA was a sense of frustration at how American railroading tends to be represented in the UK. In many ways the railways of Pennsylvania run through a very British landscape and it would be nice to see that reflected on the exhibition circuit rather than so many layouts that are so self consciously American that they become a parody of the genre. That American layout that has been lurking at the back of my mind has quietly transformed from a lakeside grain silo to an overgrown canalside with that brilliant lifting bridge at Williamsport as a centerpiece.
